Stockholm : There are nearly 6,000 confirmed cases of the new influenza A (H1N1) virus worldwide, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said Wednesday, with the US accounting for roughly half those cases.
The pan-European agency tallied some 5,935 global cases including 3,009 in the US, 2,282 in Mexico and 358 in Canada.
Other countries in Latin America with confirmed cases include Panama 15, Costa Rica and Brazil that each had eight cases, Colombia had six while El Salvador had four cases, the ECDC said.
No new cases were reported Wednesday from the Asia and Pacific region, where New Zealand had seven cases, Japan four, South Korea three and China two.
The influenza, popularly called swine flu, has to date claimed 63 lives of which 58 were in Mexico, three in the US and one in Canada, the ECDC said.
In Europe there were seven new confirmed cases compared to Tuesday, raising the number of confirmed cases to 217.
Spain topped the tally with 100 cases. Britain has reported 68 cases, France 13, Germany 12 and Italy nine.
In total 15 countries in Europe have reported cases of influenza A (H1N1).
