Washington : Condemning the “senseless” Mumbai attacks in the world’s largest democracy, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives has urged the American people to stand by the people of India.
The third US state legislature to condemn the November 2008 attacks, the Pennsylvania House passed a resolution honoring the memory of the victims by a 192-0 vote Wednesday in the presence of Indian ambassador Meera Shankar.
Introduced by Democrat Rick Taylor and co-sponsored by 34 others, the resolution condemns emphatically “the senseless attack in the world’s largest democracy”.
It also pays tribute “to the courage and dedication of the Indians who in the service of freedom and democracy made great sacrifice on behalf of others and urged “the citizenry of the commonwealth and the nation to stand by the people of India.”
Addressing the House, Shankar said: “India had defeated the attack as we maintain peace between the communities.
“Mumbai showed that their spirit cannot be cowed down,” she said stressing the need for international solidarity in meeting the challenge of terrorism.
The US House of Representatives and the Senate passed resolutions in February condemning the attacks. Legislatures of two other states, New York and New Jersey, passed similar resolutions in November.
