Mosul, Iraq : Iraqi Army forces foiled three suicide truck bomb attacks in the northern city of Mosul on Sunday, killing a suicide bomber and detaining the other two, an Iraqi military source said.
“The Iraqi soldiers opened fire on a suspected suicide truck bomb in the town of Qaiyarah, some 50 km south of Mosul, and partially blew up the truck,” Brigadier, Muta’ Habib al-Khazraji, commander of the Iraqi 3rd Division, told Xinhua by telephone.
The troops detained the suicide bomber who was seriously wounded and was later identified as a Saudi national, Khazraji said.
Another suicide truck bomb was captured by the soldiers in the town, and the suicide bomber was also identified as a Saudi national, he added.
The soldiers also shot dead the driver of a third truck rigged with explosives in the Mithaq neighborhood in southern Mosul and blew it up before reaching its target, he said.
In separate incident, the Iraqi soldiers opened fire on a car in Mosul’s western neighborhood of Thawrah, burning the car and killing the four militants aboard, Khazraji said.
The Iraqi security forces were in high alert in Mosul as intelligence reports said that more car bomb attacks could take place in the city, he said.
Mosul, the capital of the predominantly Sunni province of Nineveh, is some 400 km north of the Iraqi capital.
