NALCO ups security at bauxite mines

By IANS,

Bhubaneswar : State-owned National Aluminium Company (NALCO) has strengthened security in its bauxite mines area in Panchpatmali hills of Koraput in the aftermath a Maoist attack in April, a company official said Thursday.

At least 10 Central Industrial Security Force personnel were killed in the attack on the mines located in Panchpatmali Hills, about 370 km from here, April 12.

“Security arrangements have been augmented at most vulnerable points including at magazine house, where the explosives are stored,” the official said in a statement.

NALCO is Asia’s largest integrated aluminium producer. The bauxite from Panchpatmali mine feeds the refinery at Damanjodi town located nearby.

“Nalco has also drastically reduced the storage of explosives at the magazine house. As per the latest measure, the stock of explosives is kept to the barest minimum of about 4-5 days consumption,” the statement said.
