Lucknow: B.L.Joshi will reach the Uttar Pradesh capital Tuesday morning to take over as the state’s governor, succeeding T.V.Rajeshwar, who left Monday evening after completing his five-year term.
Joshi, earlier the governor of Uttarakhand, would be the second former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer to be Uttar Pradesh governor after Rajeshwar.
An officer of the 1957 IPS batch (Rajasthan cadre), Joshi held key positions during the prime ministerships of Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi as well as Rajiv Gandhi. He was posted to Washington and Islamabad and also held assignments with the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) too.
He sought voluntary retirement from service in 1991.
Initially, Joshi was appointed lieutenant governor of Delhi in 2004 and sent to Meghalaya April 2007, However, barely five months later, he was sent to Uttarakhand in the same capacity and now comes to India’s most populous state.
Meanwhile, extensive renovation work has been started at the Lucknow Raj Bhawan. According to reports, the exquisite carpets which adorn the lavishly designed Governor’s House, were being removed to provide Joshi and his wife a dust-free environment.
“The new governor is highly allergic to dust, therefore initially, he will be put up in a bungalow at Gautampalli, a colony for senior bureaucrats, from where he will move to the Raj Bhawan after the renovation is completed,” a senior official told IANS.
