Kochi: The Kozhikode Chief Judicial Magisterate Court (III) remanded Abdul Haleem, accused in the Kozhikode twin blasts of 2006, into the judicial custody till August 20. The court also agreed the request of the police that Haleem be kept in a special (solitary) cell in the jail since he has been charged with anti-national crimes. Haleem has been in police custody for the last 10 days.
Police claim to have got important information regarding the blast while questioning Haleem. The police are now accusing seven people in the blast case. Earlier, there were only five accused in the twin blast case. Muhammed Fayas, who has been killed in encounters with the army in Kashmir, and Shammi Firose, a native of Malappuram, are the new ones added to the list of accused. Thadiyantavide Naseer is the main accused. He is absconding for months.
The police have reportedly informed that Abdul Jaleel, the fifth accused in the case and supposed to be a friend of Haleem, would be brought to Kozhikode for collecting evidence. Jaleel is now under the custody of the Karnataka police. The Crime Branch will submit an appeal in the Bangalore court to get him for questioning.
Abdul Haleem was arrested by the state police on July 22 when probing into the Ernakulam Collectorate blast. He was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days. He was then sent to police custody for 10 days since the police maintained they needed to question him in the Kozhikode blast case.
Three people were injured in the blasts that took place in the two bus stands in Kozhikode in March 2006.
