Islamabad : Hamid Saeed Kazmi, Pakistan’s religious affairs minister, was injured and his driver was killed Wednesday when assailants opened fire at his vehicle here.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
The minister was attacked when he was passing through Melody Market, Geo TV reported.
Eyewitnesses said that two men on a motorcycle shot at the minister, injuring him in his left leg.
“After the firing, the gunman dumped his rifle along the street and fled on a motorbike,” DPA quoted Jamil Ahmad, a vendor who witnessed the attack, as saying.
The driver, Muhammed Younis, died on the spot and the vehicle rammed into a tree.
The attackers fired indiscriminately, also injuring the minister’s gunman.
Kazmi was rushed to a hospital.
