New Delhi: Ending about two-month long suspension over the appointment of a Vice Chancellor for Centrally-run Jamia Millia Islamia, the Central government yesterday appointed ex-civil servant Najeeb Jung for the coveted post.

Jung who is likely to join work from Thursday was among the last three names short-listed for the post. He will take over from incumbent Mushirul Hasan, who was also one of the three contenders for the post besides serving IAS officer Afzal Amanullah, who is principal secretary, home, in Bihar.

An expert on energy Jung studied at St. Stephen’s college, Delhi and the London School of Economics, London, before joining the IAS in 1973 batch. He quit the service after his stint as joint secretary (exploration) in the petroleum ministry. He is currently pursuing his PhD on energy economics from Oxford University.

It is said that the second term for the eminent historian Mushirul Hasan was opposed by several Muslim MPs. They had reportedly requested the President of India to ensure that Hasan was not reappointed the university head. They had alleged flourishing of corruption and nepotism during his regime.

Jung will address media tomorrow in the premises of the university.
