Delhi school stampede inquiry report submitted

By IANS,

New Delhi : The inquiry report into last week’s stampede in a Delhi school, in which five students were killed and 34 injured, was submitted to the government Friday.

“I have submitted my report today. But I can’t disclose any details,” Deputy Commissioner of northeast Delhi T.C. Nakh, who conducted the inquiry, told IANS.

Five girl students were killed and at least 34 were injured Sep 10 in a stampede at the Government Senior Secondary School (Classes 6-12) in Khajoori Khas area of northeast Delhi. The victims were mostly from Classes 7-10 and had come to the school in pouring rain for their mid-year examinations.

“I recorded statements of 161 people which included teachers of the school, residents of the locality and others,” said Nakh.

Initial reports suggested that a rumour about electric current leaking into the rainwater accumulated in the school compound triggered a stampede. However, victims told police that the incident took place while they were trying to make their way up and down a staircase.

Some alleged that boys who had come to the school to give their examination tried to molest them which resulted in the accident.

The probe was ordered to establish the reasons behind the stampede and fixing responsibility of the officials at fault.

The school will reopen Sep 29.
