School for inmates’ kids launched in Ghaziabad jail

By IANS,

Ghaziabad : Children of undertrials and convicts lodged in Ghaziabad’s Dasna jail will not be deprived of their right to education as a school for such kids was inaugurated inside the prison premises Monday.

The school comes under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan programme of the Uttar Pradesh government called the Vaikalpik Shiksha Kendra (Alternate Education Centre).

“Two rooms have been set up as the school. Two teachers were appointed and 17 children were admitted today (Monday) in the school,” V.K. Singh, Dasna jail superintendent, said.

“All the children reside inside the jail since their mothers are lodged there. There are 23 such children in the jail but only 17 children who are more than four years old have been admitted in the school,” Singh said.

“The school will be for students of up to Class 5,” Singh added.

All expenses on the school would be met by the government. The students would be provided books, food and school uniforms free of cost.
