Congress suggests twin approach to deal with Maoists

By IANS,

New Delhi: The Congress party Friday suggested a twin approach to curb the Maoist terror: deal strongly with perpetrators of violence and also address the socio-economic issues behind the growth of Maoism.

“The twin approach of dealing sternly with the perpetrators of violence and simultaneously addressing the socio-economic issues behind Naxalism should be adopted to deal with it,” Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmad told reporters.

He agreed with party general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s view that “poverty and discrimination are the main reasons” behind the growth of Maoist terror.

Ahmad also said that though law and order is the subject of the state governments, but the central government is ready to provide all possible help to fight Maoism.

Maoist guerrillas Thursday ambushed a police patrol and gunned down at least 17 policemen in a jungle stretch of Gadchiroli district in Maharashtra, which is going to assembly polls Oct 13.
