Nigerian man, Indian wife held with drugs in Punjab

By IANS,

Kharar (Punjab) : A Nigerian man and his Indian wife were arrested in this Punjab town for allegedly running a drug racket, police said Wednesday.

According to police, 33-year-old Baba Andrew John and 42-year-old Manjeet Kaur were stopped at a check-post Tuesday and police recovered five grams of smack from their car in Kharar town in Mohali district, around 15 km from state capital Chandigarh.

The couple was travelling in their white Indica car, which was registered as a taxi in Chandigarh.

“John had come to India on a study visa and some eight years ago had married Kaur, who was a divorcee and a native of Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab. They were staying at a rented accommodation here,” said Tarlocham Singh, investigating officer of the case.

“This couple was running a business of drugs for many months. We are hoping to seize more contraband and nab more culprits involved in this racket.”

A police officer said John’s passport was going to expire in November this year and he had applied for its renewal.
