Kerala school in trouble over ad in exam paper

By IANS

Thiruvananthapuram : An advertisement in an IT exam paper for Classes 3 and 6 in a Kerala school has led the government to announce a probe, but the management says in its defence that it did so only to cover expenses as the subject is not part of the curriculum.

The issue of the textile shop’s advertisement in the Manoorkonam Edanila UP School paper was even brought up in the state assembly with Education Minister M.A. Baby telling the house: “In both these classes, IT is not part of the curriculum. The school conducted the examination in IT on its own.”

He said an inquiry would look into how it happened and action would be taken against the guilty.

School headmaster Shiva Prasad admitted to the advertisement in the first term examination paper. He said the school was running the IT course even though it was not part of the curriculum for the benefit of the children.

“We are running a course in IT for school kids and this is not part of the curriculum. But it is done to see that children get exposure to IT. And since this is not part of the curriculum we make our own question paper and it involves expenses,” Prasad told IANS.

“We did it for the benefit of the children to find out how far the IT course has benefited them. There was no other motive,” he added.

The education department sets the papers for all government schools. IT forms part of the curriculum only from Class 8 onwards in all government-run schools.
