Pakistan not to compromise on nuclear program: PM Gilani

By NNN-KUNA,

Islamabad : Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Gilani Saturday said that the country will not compromise on its nuclear program and that the nuclear assets were safe under the command and control authority.

“We will not compromise on our nuclear program”, said Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani while talking to newsmen in eastern Multan city. He said that there was no threat to countrys nuclear program which was completely safe and secure.

His comments came amid reports in the Western media about threats of extremists taking over the countrys nuclear assets.

Also, on Friday the US State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said that it had no specific concern about possible nuclear proliferation from Pakistan.

The Washington Post had reported that in 1982 China provided Pakistan with weapons grade uranium for two bombs.

The report is based on a letter Dr. A. Q. Khan allegedly wrote to his wife. We dont have any specific concerns about proliferation per se specifically from Pakistan. We feel confident that the command and control of nuclear weapons in Pakistan secure, a local daily Dawn quoted the spokesman as saying.

However, the spokesman pointed out that US placed a high, maybe the highest, priority on the importance of securing nuclear materials and President Barack Obama was committed to a new and stronger non-proliferation regime.
