Karunakaran seeks his son’s re-admission to Congress

By IANS,

Thiruvananthapuram: The Congress party’s Kerala unit president Ramesh Chennithala Tuesday said he has received a letter from party veteran K. Karunakaran asking that his son K. Muraleedharan and his supporters should be admitted to the Congress.

Chennithala said he would discuss the issue with Karunakaran since the Congress party in its last executive meeting had decided against re-admitting Muraleedharan.

“I will be meeting him and discuss the issue with him. If need be, the party executive will again discuss if Muraleedharan should be re-admitted,” said Chennithala.

At a five-hour long meeting held here, a few leaders like P.C. Chacko (MP), former Meghalaya governor M.M. Jacob and former state minister K.K. Ramachandran batted for Muraleedharan’s re-admission to the party.

Senior Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran is reported to have said that the issue could be taken up at the AICC level.

The issue resurfaced after Minister of State for Home Mulapally Ramachandran expressed the view that Muraleedharan should be given re-entry to the Congress party.

Muraleedharan was suspended from the Congress for anti-party activities in 2005 following which he and his father K. Karunakaran formed the Democratic Indira Congress-Karunakaran (DIC-K). A year later, the DIC-K merged with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

On Aug 1 this year, Muraleedharan was expelled from the NCP after he made his intention public that he was interested in returning to the Congress.
