Gill satisfied with work at Indira Gandhi stadium

New Delhi: Sports Minister M.S. Gill Monday visited the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium Complex and voiced confidence that it would be ready in time for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.

The venue will host the gymnastic, wrestling and cycling events. The delay in constructing the Games venues led to Gill facing a volley of questions in parliament last week.

The minister said there was still time left for the venues to be readied for the Games scheduled in October next year.

“I know we were behind schedule but we need to make sure that we do not compromise on quality and safety,” he said.

“Most of the work will be finished by December and the rest will be done by January or February. The Games are in October, so we still have a lot of time,” Gill told reporters after inspecting the stadium.

The work at the cycling velodrome began late and it raised speculation whether it can be finished on time.

“There was a debate over the cycling velodrome but we started it only in January 2009 as there were some issues to be sorted out. I think the Sports Authority of India and all the engineers are doing a fine job.”
