New Delhi: Nitin Gadkari Saturday took over as the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), succeeding Rajnath Singh.
Gadkari, chief of the BJP’s Maharashtra unit, was warmly embraced by senior party colleagues soon after outgoing president Rajnath Singh said that he had already stepped down.
Gadkari had earlier said he would formally take charge of the party Dec 24.
Saturday’s announcement comes a day after Sushma Swaraj replaced the veteran L.K. Advani as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha to mark a generational change in the country’s main opposition party.
