Madrid : Madrid presented its candidacy to host the 2016 Olympic and Para-Olympic Games, mayor Alberto Ruiz confirming that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had received the Spanish captial’s bid before the deadline.
The bids for the 2016 summer Olympic Games closed Thursday evening. IOC will formally announce the candidacies Friday.
The cities competing for the 2016 Olympic Games include Chicago (USA), Tokyo (Japan), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Prague (Czech Republic), Doha (Qatar) and Madrid (Spain).
The IOC will announce the finalists in June 2008, and the host will be selected by secret ballot in October 2009.
Spain hosted the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, home of the then IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch.
The 2008 Olympic games will be hosted by Beijing (China) and the 2012 Games by London (Britain).
