Death toll due to intense cold wave in northern India rises to 541

New Delhi : Intense cold wave continued to play havoc in Uttar Pradesh (UP) with 23 more deaths reported in the state in the past 24 hours raising the total death toll due to cold to 541 in the state.

Meanwhile, the maximum temperatures are below normal by 7-10 degrees C over many parts of UP, Punjab, Bihar, some parts of Haryana and isolated pockets of Jharkhand, Gangetic west Bengal & Tripura. They are below normal by 3-5o C over some parts of North Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic west Bengal and Haryana. The maximum temperature was reported above normal by 3-5o C over many parts of Rajasthan, Assam & Meghalaya and some parts of Gujarat, east & west coasts.

A feeble western disturbance is likely to affect western Himalayan region during next 48 hours with low to medium clouds over parts of western Himalayan region, east and northeast India.

According to Met department, fog conditions will continue over parts of Indo-Gangetic plains and Assam and cold day conditions may occur over parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar during next 1-2 days. Weatherman says cold day conditions may abate from Punjab and Haryana during next 1-2 days.

Isolated rain and snow have been forecast over Jammu & Kashmir and dry weather conditions over remaining parts of the country.
