Caracas : At least eight inmates were killed and 16 injured during a gunfight at the La Planta prison here, a jail official said.
“There was a regrettable internal situation between wings two and three in which eight inmates died and 16 were wounded,” national Penitentiary Services director Consuelo Cerrada told reporters.
The gunfight began Wednesday due to quarrels among some of the prisoners, Cerrada said and denied versions of some relatives of the inmates who said that the National Guard intervened in the shoot-out to control the situation.
“All the dead are inmates, the majority of them (killed) by firearms,” she said.
The prison services chief said that the confrontation was among inmates and no other people were involved.
