New Delhi: Spain defeated South Africa 4-2 in the inaugural match of the Hockey World Cup at the Major Dhyan Chand National stadium here Sunday.

The two teams were locked 2-2 at half time in the pool B match.

Scorers:

Spain: Roc Oliva (19th) David Alegre (21st), Rodrigo Garza (46th), Pau Quemada (60th).

South Africa: Julian Hykes (16th minute), Ian Haley (30th).
