Blueline toll 83, police doubts suicide

New Delhi : A young man was crushed under the wheels of a speeding Blueline bus Thursday while he was crossing the road, but the police say he might have committed suicide by jumping before the bus.

The victim, identified as Sushant Kumar Sahu, appearing to be in early 20s, was crushed under the wheels of the Blueline bus plying on Route No 433 between Jantar Mantar and Central Workshop, near Rafi Marg here around 3.00 p.m.

“According to eye witnesses, Sahu came under the wheels after he, sitting on the pavement, suddenly tried to cross the road,” said the station house officer of the Parliament police station, Awanish Chander Dwivedi.

“Primary investigation reveals that he was mentally disturbed and might have committed suicide,” he added.

The police said Sahu came from Orissa and was working in a garment factory in Gurgaon. No case has been registered yet.

In a recent interview with IANS, Delhi Police chief Y.S. Dadwal said taming errant Blueline buses was not his “priority”.

“We can’t monitor every single Blueline bus plying on Delhi’s roads. Over five million vehicles travel in the capital daily, and we have other important traffic related priorities to look after. Managing the vehicular flow and prosecuting law offenders is more important,” Dadwal had said.

The capital has over 4,000 Blueline buses, which form a crucial part of the city’s public transport system. Known as “killer buses”, these claimed over 100 lives last year.

They are again facing public ire as they have figured in a large number of fatal accidents in recent months.
