Patna: Former Bihar MP Anand Mohan, serving a life term for the 1994 lynching of Gopalganj district magistrate G. Krishnaiah, was allowed by police to visit a politician’s residence, hold a press conference and attend a janata darbar (people’s court), an official said Wednesday.

A day after this happened, the state government Wednesday suspended six policemen.

“Six policemen of an escort party accompanying Anand Mohan were suspended Wednesday after being found guilty,” a police official said.

Mohan is in a jail in Saharsa district, some 210 km from here.

“Anand Mohan visited the residence of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Nagmani in Samastipur to freshen up and then held a press conference in the presence of the policemen escorting him from jail in Saharsa to a court in Sitamarhi,” the official told IANS over telephone.

Mohan opposed the Women’s Reservation Bill during the press conference.

Later he held a janata darbar in Sitamarhi where his gunmen were present.

The district administration ordered a probe into the matter when the top brass of the state administration took note of the incident.

This is not the first such case in Bihar. Criminals often enjoy a good life in custody. In the past, raids in the state’s jails have led to the seizure of colour TVs, mobile phones, imported liquor and cigarettes.
