BRT corridors are the future for big cities: IIT-Delhi

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi (IIT-Delhi) says the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor might have taken a “temporary beating” but it is the future for big cities like Delhi.

“We don’t go by temporary beatings. It’s the future for big cities like Delhi,” IIT-Delhi director Surendra Prasad told IANS on the sidelines of an event here.

“Let me stand by my colleagues to say that we sold a concept for mass bus transit system in Delhi,” Prasad added.

A few professors of IIT-Delhi were consultants to the Delhi government in conceptualizing the BRT corridor in the city on the lines of similar dedicated bus corridors in many big cities around the world.

But long traffic snarls, especially in car lanes, made the BRT an object much detestation among road commuters in the capital.

However, the government is going ahead in extending these separate corridors for buses, car and slow-moving traffic to other arterial roads of the city after incorporating changes that were suggested from the lessons drawn from the first BRT corridor in south Delhi.
