New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday said the voting on the cut motions on demand for grants helped expose the “unholy alliance” between the ruling UPA and the “vulnerable and phony section of the opposition”.
The ruling alliance with the support of smaller parties won the voting on cut motions, which was moved by the BJP and Left parties last month. “The cut motion on the demand for grants was lost but it achieved its success in exposing the unholy alliance of the vulnerable and phony section of the opposition with the ruling UPA,” a statement issued by the party here said.
The statement further said that there was “indeed a vulnerable section in the Opposition” which was open to manipulation due to “cases of corruption against their leaders and the ability of the CBI to manipulate the top leadership”.
“The UPA (United Progressive Alliance) has undermined various political institution,” said leaders of opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, in a joint statement.
The statement was released after the budget session of both houses of parliament ended Friday.
“Ministerial corruption and misdemeanours highlighted in the case of (Communication and IT minister) A. Raja and (former minister of state for external affairs) Shashi Tharoor, misuse of the CBI, undermining democratic institutions by indulging in phone tapping of political opponents and inconvenient colleagues, the contradictions within the government on the issue of how to handle Maoist violence were the high points of this session,” it said.
Emphasis was placed on the government’s handling of food prices, which said that this parliamentary session’s “high point” was “complete helplessness of the UPA to manage inflation, particularly, the food inflation”.
The BJP had organized a rally in Delhi during the session on April 21 to protest price rise.
On the Maoist issue, the opposition party said that it would support the government’s tough line against the rebels. “It is ironical that from the NDA to the CPI-M, the opposition wants the country to close ranks to fight the Maoists. It is the ruling alliance that witnessed division in its ranks on this issue,” said the statement.
