Shimla : Construction work on the Rohtang tunnel in Himachal Pradesh will be completed by 2015, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said Friday.

“The work would start in June and finish by February 2015,” he told reporters after meeting Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Chief Engineer P.K. Mahajan.

Dhumal said it was a dream project of former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, who sanctioned the project for the people of Lahaul valley, who remain cut off due to snowfall and closure of Rohtang Pass (13,050 feet).

“The total project cost has been estimated at Rs.1,458 crore,” he said.

The horseshoe-shaped tunnel would be 8.80 kilometres long. Two more tunnels have been proposed to be constructed in Himachal Pradesh, one each on National Highway 21 and 22.
