England team returns after ignominious exit

By IRNA,

London : The England football team returned to the UK early Tuesday morning after suffering its worst-ever World Cup defeat and uncertainty about the future of its Italian coach Fabio Capello.

The squad touched down at London’s Heathrow Airport, were whisked through the VIP lounge and sped away in waiting cars out of sight of angry fans.

Capello, the highest paid national coach at the World Cup, told a press conference in South Africa on Monday that the English Football Association (FA) would make a decision in two weeks to find out if he can stay in his post.

He remained unapologetic about England’s ignominious 4-1 defeat by arch-rivals Germany in the first knockout stage of tournament after three poor performances in the qualifying round in what was considered to be the easiest group.

The 64-year old Italian coach instead blamed the players for being “really tired” and pledged to introduce younger players if he was allowed to continue for the two years remaining in his contract estimated to be worth £6 million a year.

The British press and commentators are virtually unanimous in suggesting that he must go, but it will cost the FA millions in compensation.

England’s exit has led to much soul searching coming at an end of a ‘golden generation’ of top stars and the failure by two foreign coaches revive the team’s fortunes.
