Lathicharge on KSU march protesting head-scarf ban

By TwoCircles.net Staff Correspondent,

Kannur: The police yesterday lathicharged the KSU activists marching to a school protesting against the ban on head-scarf there. Four leaders of the student organisation were injured in the lathicharge.

The members of the Kerala Students’ Union were holding a protest march to a private school run by Christian management in Thalassery when the police lathicharged. KSU state vice-president Rijil Makkutty, Kannur district general secretary Sudeep James, Vijith Mulloli and Sandeep Kodiyeri were injured and admitted to the Indira Gandhi Co-operative Hospital.

A small clash occurred when the police stopped the march in the school compound. This led to the lathicharge at around 11.30 am. The police arrested about nine KSU activists but later set them free on bail.

The Constitution ensures religious freedom but the school authorities are acting against it, accused Rijil Makkutty. He also reportedly said that the police lathicharged without any provocation at all.

The Popular Front of India had organized a march to the school on Tuesday. They also had a clash with the police when returning after the march. The police also took six PFI activists into custody.
