Dubai : The UAE is planning to export camel milk to Europe next year after the European Commission, the executive body of the 27-member European Union (EU), gives its approval.
“The UAE will be among the first suppliers of this product to the EU,” Abdullah Al Janan, executive director for Agricultural and Animal Affairs Department of the Environment and Water Ministry, said.
“We have received a letter of approval from the EU on the UAE plan on safety and quality of camel milk,” he told the Arabic daily Al Ittihad published Sunday.
“The EU letter was a reply to the one sent by the ministry in April containing data requested by the EU so as to complete laboratory tests in connection with the safety and quality of camel milk.
“A EU team will visit the camel farms, especially those producing milk, in the UAE,” said Al Janan, who also chairs the National Food Safety Committee.
Camel milk is more nutritious than cow’s milk as it has a lower fat and cholesterol content. It is rich in potassium, iron, sodium and magnesium, according to a paper presented at the 5th Dubai International Food Safety Conference in February.
