Haryana seeks liberal central grant for flood damage

By IANS,

Chandigarh: Haryana Monday urged the central government to grant liberal financial assistance and raise the compensation for the flood-affected people, especially farmers, in the state.

The request was made by senior Haryana officials during their meeting with the four-member high powered central team that visited flood-hit areas in Ambala, 45 km from here, Monday.

The team was led by home ministry Joint Secretary R.P. Nath, who was accompanied by senior officials of the agriculture, cooperation, health and power ministries of the central government.

Haryana’s Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Irrigation, S.S.Dhillon told the team that the compensation was very low.

Haryana had earlier submitted a report to the central government, assessing the loss at over Rs.1,022 crore.

In Ambala district, the team also visited flood affected areas of Dhulkot, Baldev Nagar, Rai Market Road, Goverdhan Nagar and Naggal, SYL and Narwana Branch near Ishmallpur.

Later, the team headed for Kurukshetra and Kaithal districts.

Speaking to media persons, Nath said there had been substantial loss due to the floods.

“The team will submit its detailed report to the government of India. The report would be the basis for financial assistance,” he added.
