New Delhi : The issue of price rise paralysed the Rajya Sabha Tuesday as the house was adjourned for the day following vociferous protests by the entire opposition, as well as the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Samajwadi Party (SP).
The house was first adjourned till 12 noon, and later for the day as opposition members continued their protests.
As soon as the house assembled for question hour, opposition members started protesting, demanding a discussion on price rise under a rule which entails voting.
Opposition members from all major parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Left parties, Biju Janata Dal and Janata Dal-United, as well as those from the RJD and SP, which give outside support to the government, were up on their feet demanding an adjournment motion to discuss price rise.
Repeated pleas from the chair fell on deaf ears as the members continued to raise their pitch.
“We want the discussion under Rule 168 which will involve voting, the government on the other hand wants to have a lighter discussion in zero hour which will end with a reply from the minister similar to those earlier given,” BJP Rajya Sabha member Maya Singh said.
“The whole country has censored the government on the issue of price rise by holding the Bharat bandh, through voting we will censor the government in parliament,” Singh said.
