Solatium for families of officials killed in cracker unit fire

Chennai : A solatium of Rs.5 lakh each will be given to the families of the five officials who died in an explosion in an unlicensed cracker unit in Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar distict, it was announced Friday.

On Tuesday, district revenue and police officials raided an unlicensed unit where, following a sudden fire accident, eight officials were seriously injured and admitted to a private hospital in Madurai.

Two officials – Rajmohan and Kumarasamy – died within hours of the incident. Sub-Inspector of Police M. Ramesh, Constable S. Ganesan and Sattur Revenue Inspector S. Rajesh Kannan succumbed Friday.

Apart from solatium to the families of those killed, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has ordered jobs for one suitable person from each family at the earliest, an official said.

The state government has decided to bear the medical expenses incurred by the injured officials.
