39 temples on government land face demolition

By IANS,

Ranchi : As many as 39 temples constructed on government land in Ranchi district of Jharkhand have been issued notices asking why they should not be pulled down, an official said Friday.

Some of the temples are more than 50 to 60 years old where thousands of devotees pray every day.

The authorities of the temples were earlier this week asked to explain why the temples should not be demolished as they have been constructed on government land.

Ranchi Deputy Commissioner K.K. Soan told reporters that the temples have been served show cause notices following a direction of the Supreme Court to survey the unauthorised temples constructed on government land and remove them.

Hindu organisations have expressed shock over the district administration’s move to demolish the temples.

“We will protest any move to remove the temples,” Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Birendra Pradhan told reporters.
