Wellington : An offshore earthquake of magnitude 6.4 on the Richter scale shook parts of New Zealand’s North Island Wednesday.
The quake was centred 90 km north of the volcanic White Island, which sits off the Bay of Plenty province on the island’s east coast, and 280 km under the sea.
Reports said the quake was felt in Wellington, about 600 km to the south, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
New Zealand’s second-largest city, Christchurch, on the South Island was extensively damaged by a 7.1-magnitude quake Sep 4.
