Chennai: AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa Tuesday extended her support to the 13,000 striking contract workers of Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd (NLC) and demanded that the ruling DMK urge the central government to accede to the workers’ demands.
In a statement issued here Tuesday, Jayalalithaa said: “Not adhering to the court’s judgment and the agreement it signed with the workers’ unions – the NLC management is following an anti-workers policy.”
Despite several rounds of talks with the workers’ unions, the management is not interested in coming to an amicable settlement, she said.
Expressing her party’s solidarity with the striking workers, Jayalalithaa urged Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to use his influence in the central government so that the demands of the NLC workers are met.
The contract workers struck work Sep 19, demanding pay parity with permanent workers.
