Hong Kong cardboard coffin art exhibition to break taboos

Hong Kong, (DPA) An art exhibition featuring about 20 kinds of cardboard coffins is being held in Hong Kong with the aim of breaking down taboos about death and encouraging more environmentally friendly funerals, a newspaper reported Monday.

The exhibition features caskets from Canada and South Korea, mini-coffins for pets, and a multimedia coffin with an LCD display that plays videos and music when the lid closes, the South China Morning Post said.

“Coffins and death are still taboos to everyone, and there are very few people who talk about death,” exhibition organiser Gary Sham, who works for the senior citizen organisation St. James’ Settlement, was quoted as saying.

Cardboard coffin importer Leslie Lok said the caskets were not being sold to the public although there had been inquiries from potential buyers.
