Malaysia to begin feasibility on Bullet train to Singapore in January 2011

Kuala Lumpur : The feasibility study on a proposed high-speed train service from Malaysia to Singapore will begin in January next year, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Idris Jala.

The results of the study will be submitted to the Cabinet for its further deliberation, he said during a question and answer session at the 29th malaysia-Japan Economic Association and Japan-Malaysia Economic Association (MAJECA-JAMECA) Joint Conference here Thursday.

“We will do the feasibility based on the original submission by several companies which have done the early work (on the proposed project). By the middle of next year, if we are okay with it we will approach the Singapore government (to seek its agreement to the project).”

Idris said if the project was considered feasible, the government would approach the Singapore government to get their approval and begin talks on the modality for the
project.

As for the mass rapid transit projects in the Klang Valley surropuning the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, Idris said the government was finalising the design details, especially in ensuring the network connections in terms of connecting existing routes and linking together business destinations.

“We will then present it to the (National) Economic Council and the Cabinet, and expect to finalise it before end of this year,” he added.

Idris said physical work for the project would likely start in the middle of next year. Some of the works would be parcelled out under competitive tender.
