New Delhi : Delhi is the most sought-after destination for women migrants, a majority of whom hail from states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, according to a survey conducted by a business chamber.
The survey, by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) on 1,500 women migrating to the city between May and October this year, revealed that around 38 percent of women migrated from Uttar Pradesh, 32 per cent from Bihar, 12 per cent from Rajasthan and around 6 percent from Madhya Pradesh.
A major reason to migrate was employment, with better education for their wards also forming a small chunk.
“Majority of women are increasingly becoming financially independent and the society is welcoming the change in a positive manner,” said Assocham secretary general D.S. Rawat.
The survey observed that of the 38 percent of women migrants from UP, 21 percent are in organised sector comprising housekeeping, security guards, and government peons while 65 percent are in unorganised sector like domestic help, construction labour, and scrap dealers. The remaining 14 percent were still unemployed.
Similarly, in the case of migrants from Bihar, 28 percent were in the organised sector, 64 percent in the unorganised sector and remaining eight percent were jobless.
Among the migrants from Rajasthan too, the scenario was no different as of the total 12 percent, 33 percent were in the organised sector, 56 percent in the unorganised sector and 11 percent were unemployed.
Out of total percentage, a large part of the workforce was employed in the unorganized sector.
The survey further revealed that the highest number of unemployed migrants, 20 percent, were from Madhya Pradesh.
According to the survey, only 7 percent of women migrate to the capital in search of better education facilities and a whopping 46 percent are hunting for work either for herself or for the husband. Another 24 percent migrated either because of their marriage or transfer in their job.
