Federer keen to raise funds for Queensland flood victims

By DPA,

Melbourne : One year on from his ultra successful ‘Hit for Haiti’ benefit tennis matches, Roger Federer said Wednesday he is working on a plan to re-stage the effort this weekend to raise money for the flood victims in Queensland.

“The floods here in Australia are devastating,” the world number two and 16-time Grand Slam champion said on his Facebook page.

“I am on my way to practice now and am going to speak with Tennis Australia to see if we perhaps can organise something Sunday to help raise some funds for the people of Queensland who have been affected.

“Stay tuned as it would be great if the sport of tennis can help out right before the Australian Open begins.”

Federer has always been quick to lend a hand for charity. His announcement of plans to help victims of the biggest natural flood disaster to strike the state of Queensland came with the crisis still unresolved and waters threatening to flood much of the state capital Brisbane.

Pictures on the Twitter website showed the Pat Rafter arena, scene 72 hours previously of the final of the Brisbane International ATP event, under flood waters.

Federer’s Hit for Haiti on the Sunday before the start of the 2010 Australian Open raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in earthquake relief. The Australian Open begins Monday.
