During the 1992-93 Mumbai riots, unprovoked Police firing on Hari Masjid on January 10th, 1993 resulted in death of seven and many more injured.

Srikrishna Commission blamed the then sub-inspector Nikhil Kapse for killings and fabricating stories to provide justification for their misdeeds. Nikhil Kapse have never been punished for his involvement in this incident and now he is posted in economic offences wing of the Mumbai crime branch as assistant police inspector.

Just last moth, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Task Force (STF) filed an affidavit that there was no need to register a case against Mr. Kapse and other policemen. The affidavit mentioned that STF investigation into this incident did not reveal against anything against Mr. Kapse or any other police officer.

The struggle for justice lead by victims and their families in Indian courts have kept the pressure on the government. Recently The public pressure after the Mumbai bomb blast judgment forced the Mahrashtra government to finally make an official request to the CBI for investigation, a promised made a while back.

Human rights organization doubts the sincerity of the government. Farid Batatawala of the Muslim Front demanded immediate suspension of Mr. Kapse. “The commission found him guilty of daylight murder of seven persons. There should be no delay in acting against him,” Mr. Batatawala said referring to Justice Srikrishna Commission’s report.

Maharashtra government failed to explain why it needs another investigation when Srikrishna Commission has already submitted report of its investigation. CBI investigation will delay justice that victims deserve.
