Gujarat firm to produce nausea preventing nasal spray

By IANS,

Ahmedabad : A Gujarat-based pharmaceutical company Tuesday claimed to have won for the first time in India the patent for a nasal spray that prevents vomiting and nausea, which will be of great help to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Lincoln Pharmaceuticals Limited (LPL), a Rs.130 crore turnover listed pharmaceutical company, claimed that its nasal spray helps in arresting or preventing chemotherapy-induced vomiting and nausea, a company spokesperson said.

At present anti-vomiting treatments are available in India in the conventional form of tablet and injection, which take longer time to bring relief. LPL claimed its new nasal spary can provide immediate relief.

Mahendra Patel, the company managing director, said that clinical tests for the drug’s efficacy and tolerability were positive. The spray contains ondansetron hydrochloride, the molecule that serves as an agent that prevents or arrests vomiting, he explained.

“As the nasal cavity is covered by a thin mucosa that is well vascularised, the ondansetron hydrochloride molecule can quickly be transferred across the single epithelial cell layer directly into the blood stream,” Patel claimed.

“We plan to market this product internationally as well,” he added.
