The case came up when four Keralites were reported to have been killed in encounter with the army in Kashmir in 2008. The Kerala police’s joint investigation team submitted chargesheet in the case at the Thalasseri Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on January 16, 2009. The case was then transferred to the NIA.
The chargesheet reportedly says that Thareeqath classes were held since 2006 at different places in Kannur, Ernakulam and Hyderabad to get young men ready for terrorist activities. Five people were selected to be recruited to Kashmir and they reached Srinagar in September 2008. The five got trained but were killed in encounter with the army. Third accused Thadiyantavide Naseer and Shafas escaped to Bangladesh on hearing the news of the encounter-killing. The two were caught from Bangladesh in November 2009 and brought to India.
