Godhra verdict is half justice: Jamiat Ulema

By TCN News,

New Delhi: Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind has termed the Ahmedabad Special Court verdict in Godhra train carnage case as half justice. The court, after nine years of the incident, acquitted 63 of the 99 Godhra Muslims and convicted 31 on 22nd Feb. Jamiat has announced to continue legal support to the convicts.

Jamiat general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Maulana Mahmood Madani said the verdict left several questions unanswered and demanded reformation of the investigative and legal system which put innocents behind bars for nine years.

“’What is the justice for those who had been held in custody for 9 years? Is there not an urgent need to reform the investigative and legal system to ensure that such harassment does not happen again?” asked Madani. He said the conspiracy theory for the Godhra train fire was communly motivated.

Most probably the investigative process relating to especially “’conspiracy theory” was influenced by the communal atmosphere of the state, he said adding that the acquittal of 63 accused has reinstated faith in justice system.

He congratulated those freed and soothed those convicted with promise that Jamiat would continue to fight for the innocents as it did in the past. It should be noted that JUH has been fighting the case for the accused including Maulvi Hussain Umar Ji.

Maulana Madani also welcomed the verdict by National Commission for Minority Educational Institution conferring minority status on Jamia Millia Islamia University and asserted that it would open door for backward Muslim youths for better education. He also demanded the same status be restored to Aligarh Muslim University.
