Pune: Back in his hometown after a long time, a defiant Suresh Kalmadi, a Congress veteran accused of corruption in organising the Commonwealth Games, insisted Saturday that he had done no wrong.Addressing a meeting for the Pune Municipal Corporation Standing Committee, the Pune MP denied he was absconding in the wake of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the corruption charges.
Kalmadi said he was in Bangkok when the CBI raided his bank lockers here March 1.
“I will never run away. There is no need to as I have not done anything wrong,” he said.
Kalmadi’s remarks related to the Games were made more in passing. His speech focussed on Pune’s local politics and his loyalty to the Congress party.
He said the CBI had failed to find “anything substantial” when they searched his bank lockers.
He said he had always “maintained a clean account of all his assets and income”.
Kalmadi has come under a cloud since the Commonwealth Games concluded in New Delhi in October last year amid charges of financial wrongdoing and lethargy. A few of his top aides in the Games have since been arrested on corruption charges.
