Inter-caste romance sparks fury, man kills sister

By IANS,

Agra: In what appears to be another case of honour killing, a man here has been arrested for killing his teen sister who was in love with a boy from a different caste, police said Thursday. He also fired a bullet at the boy’s father.

Ravi Chauhan, who is in his 30s and Wednesday evening confessed his crime, allegedly shot his 16-year-old sister Geeta. Her body was found in the Taj Ganj area Wednesday morning, a day after the killing.

Detailing the incident, police said that Geeta, a Class 11 student, was in love with Akash Dheemer. This was something the family did not approve of as they belonged to different castes.

On Tuesday, Ravi allegedly murdered his sister and with two friends went looking for Akash. While they could not find him, they spotted Akash’s father Satyendra Dheemer and shot him in the leg.

Locals of the area caught Ravi and beat him up mercilessly before handing him over to police in a serious condition Tuesday evening, officials said.

Ravi, who was admitted to a district hospital, confessed to the murder Wednesday evening.

Geeta and Akash fell in love when she went to stay with her uncle, near Akash’s home. The love affair came to light when Ravi’s wife noticed Geeta talking over the mobile phone for long hours with Akash.

Police is looking for Ravi’s friends who helped him.

“Honour killing cases occur when super ego propped by false sense of pride based on intense caste feelings grip individuals,” said psychiatrist K.C. Gurnani.

Social activist Sudhir Gupta added that a conservative and tradition bound society is unable to keep pace with changing perceptions and the freedom now enjoyed by the younger generation.
