Family, students protest Radhika’s killing

By IANS,

New Delhi : Students and family members of a girl student shot dead near her college this week took to the streets here Friday demanding her killer’s arrest, causing traffic jam on an arterial road.

The family of Radhika Tanwar, 20, and other residents of Naraina village where she lived staged the protest on the perennially busy Ring Road.

“We will keep the road blocked till we get justice,” Radhika’s father Rajinder Tanwar said.

“The police have not told us anything, we get information only from the media. As long as justice is not delivered, we will continue to block the traffic,” he added.

People from adjoining villages and Radhika’s student friends also joined the protest.

Radhika was a second year student of Ram Lal Anand College in south Delhi. She was walking to her college when she was shot dead Tuesday.

The cold-blooded murder has caused widespread outrage, with even Gursharan Kaur, wife of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, joining the chorus for the arrest of the killer, identified by police as a young male.

Police say they are hunting for the gunman but their failure to nab the killer has triggered one demonstration after another.

Meanwhile, a shutdown was called in both north and south campuses of Delhi University.

“Almost all colleges have been closed today (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday),” Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) leader Rohit Chahal told IANS. “Students and many teachers are supporting us.”
