French warplanes strike Tripoli outskirts

Tripoli: French warplanes attacked an air defence site on the outskirts of Tripoli Saturday night in a wave of air strikes against Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s forces, Xinhua reported.

The air defence site was located in Tajura, about 10 km east of the Libyan capital.

Xinhua correspondents in Tripoli also confirmed that an oil storage in the western city of Misurata exploded Saturday.

The air strike comes after western countries launched their military action to enforce a UN Security Council resolution authorising a no-fly zone over Libya.

Meanwhile, the US Saturday launched the first Tomahawk missile attacks against the Libyan air defence from warships deployed in the Mediterranean, the Pentagon said.

The US Navy has three submarines equipped with Tomahawk missiles in the Mediterranean. It also has two guided-missile destroyers, two amphibious warships and a command-and-control ship, according to US officials who said requesting anonymity.
