Guwahati: In a recent study conducted by Assam Election Watch (AEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms, an increase has been found in the number of crorepati candidates this time compared to the previous election. In 2006 Assam Assembly elections only 22 out of 251 candidates analyzed, i.e. 9%, were crorepatis while this year 50 candidates are crorepatis.
According to AEW research based on the affidavits submitted by the candidates, it is found that out of 331 candidates analyzed, 50 candidates have declared that their assets are worth more than Rs 1 crore, i.e. about 15% of the contesting candidates analyzed are crorepatis in the first phase.
The following are the top 20 candidates with maximum assets contesting elections in the Phase 1. There are two Muslim candidates among the top 20:

Tassaduk Ariful Hussain, coordinator of Assam Election Watch said, “Incidentally many of the crorepati candidates are representing some of the backward constituencies in the state.
