Speaker, mayor protest Jharkhand’s encroachment drive

By IANS,

Ranchi : Jharkhand Speaker C.P. Singh and Ranchi Mayor Rama Khalko were amongst those who marched Wednesday to protest the enchroachment drive in the state that has seen 2,000 shops being demolished or sealed over the last two weeks.

Protestors marched from the Ranchi Municipal Corporation to Morabadi ground. Speaker and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator C.P. Singh had threatened to resign if his demand for alternative arrangements for those displaced in the demolition drive in Ranchi’s Nagababa Khatal area was not met.

He alleged that overzealous officers had conducted the demolition in an inhumane manner. It was under the noses of these same officers that the two-three storied buildings had been constructed, Singh alleged.

A day after its office in Dhanbad was sealed, the main opposition party Congress also opposed the drive. Congress leader Radha Krishna Kishore alleged that the state government was overdoing the anti-encroachment drive by resorting to inhumane methods.

The party is planning a protest at the Raj Bhavan on April 2.

Besides the capital, clashes on the issue have taken place in Bokaro, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad.
