Brazil to test radiation levels in food from Japan

By IANS,

Brasilia : Brazil will test food imported from Japan for radiation contamination, a media report said.

The Brazilian official news agency reported Thursday that the aim is to prevent the entry of products that may have been exposed to radiation after the leak of radioactive material from the Fukushima nuclear plant.

The nuclear plant was damaged in an earthquake followed by a massive tsunami March 11.

Supervisors from National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) will collect food samples and send them to laboratories located in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Xinhua reported.

Another measure provides that food products from 12 prefectures around Fukushima must be accompanied by a certificate testifying the review and approval by the Japanese health authorities.

According to the Brazilian government, the possibility of radiation-contaminated food reaching Brazil is low.
